Learning Phase: Pū - Foundation
In the Pū - Foundation phase, students will develop fundamental skills in Te Reo Māori, such as recognizing sounds, forming simple sentences, and understanding language within the context of cultural identity. They will discover how Te Reo Māori is connected to their iwi heritage and begin to explore different regional dialects. In everyday environments like home and school, students will use Te Reo Māori for greetings, naming objects, and describing daily routines. They will engage in basic conversations and social interactions. Language learning strategies will include phoneme recognition, repetition, and flashcards, with an emphasis on practicing sentence patterns, following instructions, and recognizing key words.

Learning Phase: More - Developing
At the More - Developing phase, learners will build on their Te Reo Māori skills by using more complex sentence structures and understanding how language reflects cultural values. They will learn about the history of Te Reo Māori and iwi dialects. Learners will improve their reading ability by decoding longer words, and sentences summarising key points, and answering questions confidently. In writing, they will create clear paragraphs and descriptive passages. In speaking, they will share opinions and describe experiences, while listening will involve following detailed instructions and responding to more complex questions.
